Install this native plugin in your Astro project from npm. It runs with your site’s authority. Keep your existing EmDash configuration and other plugins.
1. Add the package

Open Plugins in the EmDash admin, then the whatsapp-chat settings. Save your international phone number, style and texts. The button appears when a valid number is saved.
A few things to know.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API?+
No. Save a valid WhatsApp number in international format, including the country code. The plugin opens a click-to-chat link; no account connection or API subscription is needed.
Is the chat window a live chat?+
No. Visitors write a message on your site, then open WhatsApp and press send there. No message is sent automatically.
Does it track visitors?+
The plugin stores no data and sets no cookies. Optional click reporting is off by default; enabling it sends whatsapp_click to GTM or PostHog if already present. Opening WhatsApp brings the visitor under WhatsApp’s policies.
Can I change the icon colour?+
The WhatsApp logo keeps its official colours. Choose the chat bubble for a custom button colour. With either icon, you can customise the chat window header and send button.
What happens without JavaScript?+
The button remains a regular WhatsApp link. The chat window and browser-based opening-hours rules need JavaScript.
